Dr. Hugh Gusterson has been selected to receive AAA’s Anthropology in Media Award (AIME) for 2020. This honor is reserved for persons who have “raised public awareness of anthropology and have had a broad and sustained public impact at local, national, and international level.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Gusterson has written for a variety of public outlets. However, the core of his contribution to public anthropology can be found in the more than 60 columns he’s written for Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. His work at the Bulletin “made the anthropological lens available to a broader reading public, offering it as a way of understanding the American nuclear project more deeply and with more nuance.”
