My Biography
Dr. Gillian Richards-Greaves is an Associate Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology and Geography at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina. She is also the Minority Representative for the American Anthropological Association (AAA). Dr. Richards-Greaves earned dual Ph.D.s in Ethnomusicology and Anthropology from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a BA-MA in Music Education with a Mathematics minor from Hunter College-CUNY. Dr. Richards-Greaves also holds a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from Coastal Carolina University. Her research interests encompass the musical, cultural, linguistic, and ritual expressions of the African Diaspora, emphasizing the connections between Africa, the Caribbean, and the Gullah/Geechee of the United States. Dr. Richards-Greaves is the author of Rediasporization: African-Guyanese Kweh-Kweh, which draws on more than a decade of ethnographic research in Guyana and the United States of America. She also authored several children’s books, including Eclectic Hair with Granny and Me (2021) and The Clucking Snake (2022). In 2022, Dr. Richards-Greaves was awarded a Fulbright IIE Grant, which enabled her to teach for nine months at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra State, Nigeria.
