My Biography
What first sparked your interest in anthropology?
My anthropology journey started in Ghana at the University of Cape Coast, where I completed my undergraduate degree in cultural anthropology. At the time, I knew nothing about anthropology as a field of study, but ten years have passed, and I call myself a member of the Anthropology Society globally.
What did you intend to do as a career after pursuing an education in anthropology?
As a medical anthropologist in training, I look forward to becoming an anthropology faculty member at a higher institution and researching mental healthcare systems in Ghana, drug addiction among diasporan Africans in the United States, and environmental health issues in Ghana. I also hope to mentor students in anthropology.
How do you utilize anthropological skills in your current position?
As a Ph.D. candidate researching mental healthcare systems in Ghana, I employ ethnographic and anthropological perspectives to promote and expand anthropological approaches and praxis in social science and health research. As an instructor, I promote and encourage the study of anthropology by exposing students to perspectives and approaches to anthropology.
Why did you become a AAA member and how has it enhanced your professional development?
As an anthropology graduate student, I deemed it important to join AAA, which is one of the world’s largest anthropological associations. Since becoming a member in 2020, participating in AAA’s annual meetings has helped me connect with leading scholars in my field and funding opportunities.
What tips do you have for the next generation of student anthropologists?
Anthropology is a multifaceted field that encompasses all aspects of human life and existence. Do your best to contribute your quota to the field’s goal of helping humans understand themselves and their environment. You are on the path to greatness. Attend AAA annual meetings and make connections.
