The American Anthropological Association (AAA) is pleased to announce that its membership has elected Dr. Jeff Maskovsky (CUNY) to serve as president-elect/vice president (2025-2027). Dr. Maskovsky will begin his term at AAA’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans this November and will assume the office of President at the 2027 Meeting.
“I’m deeply honored to have been elected as the AAA’s president elect and thank everyone who participated in the recent election,” said Maskovsky. “My goal is to work with the members and staff of the AAA to remake the organization so that it can better meet the challenges of the current moment. Even though the situation we face today in the US and elsewhere is in many ways very bleak, I remain hopeful about the future.”
Dr. Maskovsky is Professor and Chair of the Ph.D. Program in Anthropology at the CUNY Graduate Center, and Professor of Urban Studies at Queens College. His long history of leadership experience within the Association includes serving on the Executive Board. He also served as chair of the AAA’s Anthropological Communication Committee and continues to chair a subcommittee tasked with reimagining the publishing portfolio and the future of anthropological communication more broadly.
“With Ady Arguelles-Sabatier at the helm of the AAA,” he added, “and with her talented staff in place, we have an exciting opportunity to remake the AAA so that it can better serve its members. I can’t wait to start working with our next president, Carolyn Rouse, the executive board, the membership, and the staff in my new role. I am confident we can use the current moment to advance our scholarly and professional work in new and exciting ways.”
“Jeff’s leadership experiences reflect his commitment to collaboration, advocacy, transparency, ethical standards, and equity,” said AAA’s current President Whitney Battle-Baptiste. “These experiences will serve him well in his efforts to shape the future of the Association.”
