American Anthropological Association Statement on Violence Against Women Act

(adopted January 1994)

In light of the current discussion of violence in this country, the American Anthropological Association urges Congress and President Clinton to address a Congressional Bill introduced on January 21, 1993, by Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware, entitled The Violence Against Women Act. The bill amends federal laws with regard to violence against women, domestic violence and violent sex crimes in an effort to fight against the escalating instances of violence directed toward women. It also establishes the National Commission on Violent Crimes Against Women, to promote a national policy against violent crimes against women, and for making recommendations on how to reduce such crimes.

We, the members of the American Anthropological Association urge that this bill be brought forward and acted upon as soon as possible.
