The Gender Justice Prize honors individuals whose scholarship, practice, or advocacy advances the understanding of gender inequities and contributes to building more just and inclusive communities. This annual prize highlights work that pushes forward conversations and actions to address gender-based injustices in all areas of life.
The prize embraces an inclusive understanding of gender and welcomes a wide range of approaches and perspectives. It recognizes a particular contribution—or set of related contributions—made within the past three years.
The prize carries a cash award of $1,000.
Scholars and practitioners from all subfields of anthropology, at all career stages, are eligible for the prize.
Nomination Requirements
- Nominee’s curriculum vitae or resumé
- Evidence of work to deepen the understanding of gender injustice and/or advance gender justice
- Nominee must be a member of the AAA
- Self-nomination is allowed. All nominations, including self-nominations, must be accompanied by two letters of support explaining how the nominee’s work contributes to the understanding of gender injustice and promotion of gender justice. At least one letter must be from an anthropologist.
Guidelines
Nominees are considered for three years. Those not chosen in the first year will be considered for two more years.
Prize recipients are expected to serve on the selection committee for the following two years.
