AAA Introduces Present Tense: Anthropologists Thinking Out Loud

Opinion essays to cover topical issues of interest

Introducing Present Tense: Anthropologists Thinking Out Loud, a dynamic new online forum by the American Anthropological Association (AAA) designed to connect policy experts, leaders, and the public with the cutting-edge insights of anthropologists.

Present Tense features short, insightful essays from AAA members that delve into today’s most pressing issues. Each essay offers a unique perspective on the cultural contexts and patterns influencing global events, helping readers better understand and engage with the world around them.

Anthropology is arguably the best discipline for thinking through complex social, environmental, and ethical issues in the 21st Century, thanks to a deep engagement with diverse communities and global events. Present Tense taps into this expertise, offering a diversity of approaches and opinions useful to think and teach with, as well as for overall advocacy.

The inaugural collection covers:

  • The International Criminal Court (ICC) Warrants for war crimes related to the Gaza conflict.
  • The nationalism, economy, and rhetoric surrounding the Summer Olympics.

Additional issues will be forthcoming.

The forum is managed by the Anthropology Advocacy Committee (AAC). Any member of the AAA may submit a request to the Chairs of the AAC to consider a topic for Present Tense.
